SAC Monitoring: Shad Monitoring Data for Rivers Wye, Usk and Tywi (2006)
The purpose of this data capture was to monitor the Rivers Wye, Usk, and Tywi for the presence of shad. These rivers are designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs), partly because they support internationally important populations of twaite shad. Allis shad is also a feature of these sites and is a secondary reason for their selection as SACs. Records of other freshwater and estuarine fish species are also included within this dataset.
This dataset provides a collation of existing knowledge, habitat data, and shad records, and supplies evidence to support the design and implementation of a suitable juvenile monitoring programme for condition assessment. There were five survey sites along the River Usk, five along the River Wye, and five along the River Tywi.
Additional data are available in paper format within the associated report, including historical egg survey records dating back to 1980. These historical data were collated from the Environment Agency.

The data were collated from a variety of sources, including Excel spreadsheets containing data collected in 2006, Recorder surveys uploaded in 2007, and spatially mapped sample locations. Juvenile shad seine netting was undertaken in September and October 2005 and again in July 2006, in accordance with the protocols described by Hillman et al. (2003). Each sample station was netted multiple times, and counts were recorded for each sampling event. All fish were measured, and a subsample was identified to species using gill raker counts. Confidence in this dataset is high, as the surveys were undertaken by experienced staff.
