SAC Monitoring: Lamprey Monitoring Data for the Rivers Wye and Usk (2007)
River, Brook and Sea Lamprey are designated features of the River Usk and Wye Special Areas of Conservation (SAC). Assessments of species composition, distribution, abundance and size composition of larval lamprey (ammocoetes and transformers) populations in these river are of particular interest as an indication of Condition Assessment. The data was collected to help assess the conservation status of Lampreys in the Usk and Wye Catchments. Monitoring of the status of lampreys is required to comply with the reporting requirements of the Habitats Directive. 54 Sites on the River Wye (of which 30 contained positive records) and 35 sites in the River Usk (of which 10 contained positive records) were sampled.

The sampling strategy for the monitoring programme for sea, river and brook lamprey ammocoetes and transformers followed the protocols developed for the LIFE in UK Rivers project (Harvey and Cowx, 2003). Electrofishing was carried out with three quantative (using a delimiting, rigid framework) or semi quantative (where the framework deployment was not possible, e.g. marginal areas) samples taken at each site. The density of both Ammocoetes and Transformers were recorded for optimal (very silty) and sub-optimal (more rocky) habitats. The source data contains both positive and negative records, however negative records have not been transferred to Recorder or uploaded to the NBN Gateway.
