SAC Monitoring: Lamprey Monitoring Data for the Rivers Wye and Usk (2007)

River, brook, and sea lamprey are designated features of the River Usk and River Wye Special Areas of Conservation (SACs). Assessments of the species composition, distribution, abundance, and size structure of larval lamprey (ammocoetes and transformers) populations within these rivers are of particular importance for condition assessment. The data were collected to support the assessment of the conservation status of lampreys within the Usk and Wye catchments. Monitoring the status of lamprey populations is required to comply with the reporting requirements of the Habitats Directive.

A total of 54 sites on the River Wye (30 of which contained positive records) and 35 sites on the River Usk (10 of which contained positive records) were sampled.

Lineage

The sampling strategy for the monitoring programme for sea, river, and brook lamprey ammocoetes and transformers followed the protocols developed for the LIFE in UK Rivers project (Harvey and Cowx, 2003). Electrofishing was carried out using either quantitative sampling (employing a delimiting rigid framework) or semi-quantitative sampling (where deployment of the framework was not possible, for example in marginal habitats). Three samples were taken at each site.

The densities of both ammocoetes and transformers were recorded for optimal (very silty) and sub-optimal (more rocky) habitats. The source dataset contains both positive and negative records; however, negative records have not been transferred to Recorder 6 or uploaded to the NBN Gateway.
