SAC Monitoring: Lamprey Monitoring for the Rivers Tywi, Teifi and Cleddau (2004-2005)

River, brook, and sea lamprey are designated Annex II features of the River Tywi, River Teifi, and Cleddau Rivers Special Areas of Conservation (SACs). Assessments of the species composition, distribution, abundance, and size structure of these species within these river systems are of particular importance for condition assessment. The data were collected to support the assessment of the conservation status of lampreys within the Tywi, Teifi, and Cleddau SACs. Monitoring the status of lamprey populations is required to comply with the reporting requirements of the Habitats Directive.

A total of 112 sampling sites across the River Tywi, River Teifi, and the Eastern and Western Cleddau were surveyed, of which 77 contained positive records for either river lamprey or brook lamprey.

Lineage

The sampling strategy for the monitoring programme for sea, river, and brook lamprey followed the protocols developed for the LIFE in UK Rivers project (Harvey and Cowx, 2003). Quantitative quadrat surveys were carried out in both optimal (very silty) and sub-optimal (more rocky) habitats. Electrofishing techniques were used within a 1 m² quadrat to draw lamprey from the silt rather than stunning and trapping them within it.

Sampling of optimal habitat quadrats was undertaken three times, whilst sub-optimal habitat quadrats were sampled once. The original dataset contains both positive and negative records.
