Amphibians and Reptiles Licence Return Data (2001 - 2008)
The collation of amphibian and reptile data from licence returns was created in order to store all relevant data in one location, and mobilise records which may not have otherwise been available to the public. This dataset comprises of records of amphibian and reptile distributions across Wales obtained from former Countryside Council for Wales' and Natural Resources Wales' licence returns for scheduled amphibian and reptile species. This dataset does not represent a systematic coverage or survey of Wales, but enhances species distribution surveys. The geographic location of individual records is generally random, depending on the requirements of the licence holders. The dataset has been subject to some basic validation to eradicate erroneous outlying records and inputting errors but has not been systematically verified.

Licence return forms are completed by licence holders as a condition of receiving the licence. Licences are issued to organisations and individuals to permit activities which would otherwise be unlawful, such as deliberately capturing or disturbing scheduled species, or damaging or destroying their breeding sites and resting places. Licences are generally issued for the purposes of survey, monitoring and research, or for building and other development work. Records consist of a mixture of torch, bottle-trap and netting surveys with some translocation of species also recorded. Records from licence return forms were collated into the Recorder 6 database by the former Countryside Council for Wales' Environmental Information Team. This data has been packaged with other species licence return data on Recorder 6 and is available to download via the NBN Gateway (see Parent ID). Some more recent mammal licence return data has been digitised by Cofnod. Cofnod act as data custodian and hold the top copy of this licence return data, not the data held in Recorder 6 which is managed by NRW.
