Coastal Saline Lagoons and Pools in Wales
The Natural History Museum was asked by the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) to undertake a survey of all potential lagoonal or coastal brackish pond sites in Wales. This dataset presents the results of that survey, conducted during December 1998 as well as the results of the review and proposals for the monitoring and conservation of the coastal saline lagoons in Wales. Lagoons are an unusual and rare habitat, both in the UK (total resource ca 5,000 ha) and elsewhere. The characteristic lagoon community includes species almost or entirely restricted to lagoonal habitats in the United Kingdom, where they represent some of our rarest plants and animals; nine lagoonal species are currently protected under Schedules 5 and 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981). Survey of lagoonal habitats in Wales to identify lagoons and pools and carry out an assessment of condition and monitoring.

While there had been a number of surveys of saline lagoons in England and Scotland (e.g. Bamber, 1997; Covey, 1999), there had been no investigation of the saline lagoon resource of Wales other than the NCC survey in the mid 1980s (e.g. Barnes, 1987). This dataset represents the results of the first complete survey of lagoonal habitats in Wales since then. A total of 28 potential sites or ponds were assessed, 25 ponds visited, 18 sampled, of which 12 were deemed to be saline lagoons or coastal brackish ponds. At each site the physiography of the lagoon was assessed as were all water inputs (streams, sluices, weirs, etc.) and outflows. The surrounding habitat or human exploitation of the land was noted, as were marginal plants. Salinity was measured using a Reichert salinity refractometer. Semi-quantitative samples were collected from the substratum, the submerged plants and the water column of the lagoons. Sampling was predominantly by 0.5 mm mesh hand net. Fragments of submerged plant material and other hard substrata were also examined for bryozoans and other epizooites. Quantitative samples of the sedimentary benthos were collected from sites conjectured to be saline lagoons and also from para-lagoonal habitats for analytical comparison. At each of the twelve quantitative sample sites, a sample of whole surface sediment was collected for granulometric analysis and for analysis of organic content . Area and depth were measured and sites were photographed. Where found lagoonal cockles were measured to aid interpretation of year classes.
