Sandy Shore Meiofauna of South West Wales-Impact of the Sea Empress Oil Spill
The high species diversity of meiofaunal communities imply a complex and intricate ecological web. However, relatively little information has been recorded on the ecological interactions of meiofauna. This is largely due to the practical difficulties involved in the study of these organisms. These difficulties arise from the small body size of meiofauna, their cryptic habitat and the taxonomic difficulties caused by their high species diversity. Various authors have suggested that meiofauna are potentially useful indicators of anthropogenic perturbations of the marine environment (Heip, 1980; Moore and Bett, 1989; Platt and Warwick, 1980; Vincx and Heip, 1991). This data was captured with the aim of assessing the impact of pollution from the Sea Empress oil spill on the structure and composition of meiofaunal communities of intertidal sandy beaches.

The study sites consist of twelve intertidal sandy beaches covering an area from St. David's Head in the north-west to Pendine Sands in the south-east. Meiofauna: Three replicate cores were collected from each site for faunal analysis. Physico-chemical samples: Three replicate cores were collected for particle size analysis and assessment of water content. An additional single core was collected for the analysis of organic carbon. A single sediment core was collected for hydrocarbon analysis. Three replicate pore water samples were collected at each site for salinity measurements. During November 1994 a range of sandy beaches on the Pembrokeshire coast were sampled as part of a biogeographical study of harpacticoid copepods. These samples provide a baseline data set for the assessment of oil pollution induced changes in the meiofaunal community composition. This dataset contributed to the Pembrokeshire Marine Species Atlas, see separate metadata entry.
