Rocky Shore Transect Monitoring in Milford Haven following the Sea Empress Oil Spill
Three months before the Sea Empress oil spill, baseline surveys of rocky shore fauna and flora were undertaken at fixed transect sites throughout Milford Haven and the Daugleddau Estuary. Following the spill Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) commissioned a full re-survey of the fixed transects in 1996 and 1997. The purpose of this data capture was to identify the effects of the oil spill on the flora and fauna of the rocky shore at Milford Haven through comparisons with baseline surveys and to provide quantitative data on important species for future analysis of recovery. This dataset contains the results of the survey work.

In October 1995 Milford Haven Waterway Environmental Monitoring Steering Group (MHWEMSG) commissioned a survey at 31 fixed transect sites. During the first few days of the spill and subsequent months a series of close-up photographs and quantitative data of limpet and barnacle abundances were collected at 11 of the monitoring sites. In 1996 all 31 transects were re-surveyed. The abundance of conspicuous animals, algae and lichens were noted and recorded from 3 m by 30 cm strips. Abundance scales used were the established scales as described in Baker and Wolff (1987). Any points of interest on the shores or relating to the populations observed were noted and sites were photographed for visual comparison purposes. In 1997 the monitoring was continued at ten sites, concentrating on the effects of the oil spill and the recovery from these effects. The methods were modified from that used in 1995 and 1996- the standard programme of work at each site was slightly reduced and additional quantitative recording of limpet, barnacles and fucoid algae was undertaken at selected stations. The only data associated with this project is held within the report.
