Monitoring and Surveillance of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) in Wales
This dataset contains the results from on going monitoring of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) across Wales. One of the key responsibilities of the statutory nature conservation agencies, such as Natural Resources Wales (NRW), in the UK is the identification and protection of a series of sites intended to conserve important wildlife and earth science features. These sites include SACs which are designated as part of the EC Habitats Directive. Every six years, Member States of the European Union are required to report on implementation of the Habitats Directive, under Article 17 of the Directive. This reporting provides information on: the general implementation of the Directive; and the conservation status of individual habitats and species listed under the Annexes of the Directive.

Each SAC was designated for it's presence of habitats or species listed under Annex 1 or 2 of the Habitats Directive. As part of statutory duties listed under Article 17 of the Directive, NRW staff are required to monitor the presence, absence and coverage of these species and habitats and report of these every 6 years. Monitoring data has been collected for the following cycles, 1999 - 2006, 2007 - 2012, 2013 - 2018 (current monitoring cycle). This means there is over 15 years worth of data available on site features.
