Wild Bird Licence Return Data

A collation of licence return data for bird species listed under the EC Directive on the conservation of wild birds and schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act. Excludes ringing licences, which are handled by British Trust for Ornithology (BTO). The collation was created to add to the picture of wild birds distributions in Wales, to collect relevant data in one place, and to mobilise records which may not otherwise be available.

Lineage: Licence return forms are completed by licence holders as a condition of receiving the licence. Licences are issued to organisations and individuals to permit activities which would otherwise be unlawful, such as deliberately collecting, capturing or disturbing scheduled species, or damaging or destroying their nesting sites. Licences are generally issued for the purposes of survey, monitoring and research, or for building and other development work. Records are provided by licence holders, who have very variable recording ability. The RSPB staff responsible for inputting the data have some knowledge and expertise, and are able to weed out any obviously erroneous data. Licences are only issued to surveyors who can demonstrate, through provision of references with their licence application, that they have experience of surveying the relevant bird species.
