Monitoring the Dynamics of the North Llyn Modiolus Reef
Modiolus Reefs are a feature of the Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Information is gathered about the dynamics of the reef through the recording of spat/larval settlement. This is used as an indicator of current/recent influences on the reef and can provide an early warning of potential problems. The purpose of this data capture was to investigate the dynamics of the reef. This contributes to reporting of favourable conservation status of the SAC feature. Data will be used in conjunction with acoustic methods which look at the extent of the feature (reef) and photo quadrat methods that look at the health of the feature.

Post-settlement juvenile 'spat' collectors were attached to the permanent monitoring station at Modiolus site 1. 3 kitchen scouring pads are attached by cable ties onto the pyramid marker at the site. The pads are recovered annually and placed in sealed plastic bags to present loss of juvenile mussels on the ascent back to the surface. Once back in the laboratory the spat collectors were fixed / stored in 4% formalin buffered with seawater. Upon analysis the spat collector pads were separated into 'inner' and 'outer' faces for settlement and then systematically scanned using a dissecting binocular microscope
