Datasets from the South-West Britain Sublittoral Survey
The South-west Britain Sublittoral Survey was a three-year project carried out between 1976 and 1979 by the Field Studies Council for the Nature Conservancy Council. Former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) which is now part of Natural Resources Wales (NRW), holds the data from a selection of surveys that make up the project .These are listed under Alternative Title which also includes: - 1978 SWBSS Gower sublittoral survey (JNCCMNCR10000069) - 1978 SWBSS Skokholm survey (JNCCMNCR10000076) The purpose of this data capture was to provide information on the nearshore sublittoral ecosystems present from Pembrokeshire around to Dorest and to assess the conservation interest of these sites. The area included in the survey is the old county of Pembrokeshire, the south coast of Wales, and the coast of Avon, Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and Dorset.

The project consisted of an initial literature review followed by three years of fieldwork, during which around 740 km of coastline at thirteen different sites were surveyed. Sites were selected by inspection of maps and charts to include locations exposed to different environmental conditions. A recording card was developed for use throughout the survey enabling systematic recording of habitat features. A checklist of conspicuous species was also used along with an abundance scale developed for recording the quantity of species in each separate habitat.
