Results of a Study into the Use of a Phase 2 Sampling Grid as a Monitoring Strategy for the Mawddach Estuary. (1999 CCW Marine Monitoring trials)
The aim of this survey was to investigate the feasibility of using a phase 2 sampling grid methodology to determine the proportion of muddy and sandy communities and the distribution of major communities within the estuary. The Mawddach is one of the best examples of a small, drying, bar-built estuary in Britain and, with its mountainous catchment area it has some of the lowest nutrient inputs in Wales. In order to be able to report on the condition of the estuary a number of attributes have been identified which require monitoring. This dataset contains the results of a survey carried out to trial a sampling strategy and methodology that addresses two of these attributes: - The relative proportion of muddy and sandy communities. - The distribution of major communities within the estuary.

MapInfo was used to set up an evenly spaced grid of sampling stations across the whole estuary, from high water springs to low water springs. The grid was scaled to allow for at least five sampling stations on each of the major intertidal biotopes (this done using the 1997 Marine Intertidal Phase 1 map of the estuary). An extra 30 sample stations were added to account for 'minor' biotopes not already covered by the grid. At each sample station (saltmarsh was not sampled) sediment surface features and conspicuous species were noted. Eight cores were collected from each sample station. These were pooled and the infauna subsequently processed. The fauna present, identified to species level, were recorded on a spreadsheet as were the results of analysis of particle size characteristics of the granulomatric sample. The infaunal and granulometrc data were then processed to identify the biotopes.
