Macroinvertebrates in the Glaslyn / Dwyryd Estuary
This dataset contains the results of a macro-invertebrate survey of the Glaslyn/Dwyryd estuary undertaken in 1978 in order to better understand the ability of the estuary to receive wading birds that may be displaced by barrage construction. The purpose of this data capture was to assess the capacity of the estuary to receive wading birds that might be displaced from other estuaries on the Irish Sea flyway by barrage construction. Data capture also helped to obtain data relevant to the management of the adjacent Morfa Harlech National Nature Reserve and enabled collection of data on the marine fauna of the area.

82 sampling stations were established across the estuary. At each station five core samples were taken. Four were washed through a sieve and the portion retained was preserved in 5% formalin. These were then examined in the laboratory with the animals present counted and identified. The percentage volume of fines was also determined and a measure of organic content taken. The fifth core sample was bagged and preserved for sediment analysis. Salinity measurements of the estuary water were obtained for a high spring and a high neap tide. This forms part of a series of studies on the estuaries of Gwynedd made partly to assess their capacity to receive wading birds.
