Pembrokeshire Marine Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Sea Salinity Time Series Data
Within Pembrokeshire Special Area of Conservation (SAC) an integrated monitoring strategy at a site level is employed to produce a view of the status of each feature within the SAC as a whole. The Data is captured as part of the Across-Wales Diving Survey, designed to gather information on Reef features across the Marine SAC's in Wales. In order to ascertain whether observed changes are due to natural factors or anthropogenically created factors, a suite of environmental factors also need to be considered, such as turbidity, temperature, salinity and water chemistry. Salinity loggers have been placed at sites across Pembrokeshire Marine SAC. The data is collected continuously, although this has not been processed to produce daily averages due to the low confidence in the data. Additional salinity recordings are taken at Skomer MNR but these are covered in a separate metadata entry. Salinity is also recorded in saline lagoons within Wales. Metadata about this data is held in a separate entry. Gathering physical data such as temperature provides context and background information for the condition assessment of each of the reef features monitored.

All the Salinity data is recorded by Starr Oddi Salinity and Temperature loggers. As each logger is deployed a record is kept of which site it has been deployed to and how often the logger has been reused. Loggers are recovered every year but this is dependant on weather conditions and diver availability. All loggers are placed at a fixed location on the seabed. These are marked by bolts, pitons or attached to Monitoring Station Markers. The logger records the Date, Time and Temperature (oC) and salinity (psu) at 1 hour intervals. For each logger, metadata is recorded; including the serial number of the logger and the date and times the logger was deployed and recovered. The salinity loggers are part of a wider network of loggers in Wales that include the Skomer MNR and the Saline lagoons loggers as well as a series of temperature loggers that are deployed across Wales.
