Nant Teyrn Freshwater Environmental Change Network (ECN) Site
Environmental Change Network (ECN) is network of sites spanning the UK where we conduct environmental monitoring using standard methods. There are currently 12 terrestrial sites and 45 freshwater sites, covering a wide range of upland and lowland habitats including moorland, chalk grassland, woods and forests, farmland, small ponds and streams, large rivers and lakes. ECN is the UK member of the International Long-Term Ecological Research Network (ILTER) and of LTER-Europe. The ECN's objectives are to establish and maintain a network of sites from which to obtain comparable long-term datasets through the monitoring of a range of variables; to integrate and analyse these data to identify natural and man-induced environmental changes, improve understanding of the causes of change, distinguish short-term fluctuations from long-term trends, and predict future changes. Nant Teyrn is a small upland stream on the out flow from Llyn Teyrn in Yr Wyddfa National Nature Reserve. This freshwater Environmental Change Network (ECN) site is co-located with Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon terrestrial ECN site. As part of the ECN project long term monitoring of physical, chemical and biological variables occurs at Nant Teyrn. The monitoring is designed to collect, store, analyse and interpret long-term datasets for physical, chemical and biological variables, which drive or respond to environmental change. The data is subject to a variety of quality control procedures (QA). Each monitoring protocol has a corresponding paper form. The data is entered into an Excel spreadsheet which has background calibration graphs in order to flag any outliers within the data. These outliers can then be double checked against the paper records. Every year the spreadsheet is checked against the paper records, and each line of data within the spreadsheet is assigned a quality code which helps to flag up any problems during data collation e.g. snow in the gauges. The CEH CCU also has its own QA procedures which they follow on receipt of the data.

Standard protocols which have been developed specifically for ECN are used to collect data (see individual metadata entries in the 'contains' field below for more details). The data is sent to CEH Merlewood where it is checked and transferred into a centralised database managed by the ECN Central Coordinating Unit (CCU) incorporating data from all ECN sites across the UK.
