Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon Terrestrial Environmental Change Network (ECN) Site - Biological Data
This dataset consists of biological data collected at the Environmental Change Network (ECN) terrestrial site - Yr Wyddfa / Snowdon North Wales. The 700ha site incorporates the summit of Yr Wyddfa and includes three additional summits over 800 m, it also includes 5 lakes. Aspects of the vegetation, vertebrates and invertebrates at the site are monitored following ECN protocols. As well as the ECN monitoring protocols, other data collected purely for Natural Resources Wales (NRW) use and include data on the arctic alpine flora and fungi. Phenological information is also collected (information on the timing if things e.g. tadpole hatching). The purpose of this data capture is to collect data on the biodiversity of the site and how it changes over time in order to indicate the possible causes and consequences of environmental change in the terrestrial environment.

Vegetation: Baseline survey carried out on the whole site with species presence related to National Vegetation Classification (NVC). Coarse-grain sampling, 50 random 2 m x 2 m grid plots surveyed every 9 years. Fine-grain sampling, 2 10 m x 10 m plots randomly selected within each NVC type surveyed every three years. Vertebrates: Annual bird counts by species are undertaken using British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) Breeding Bird Survey methodologies. Bat species and behaviour are mapped on transects. The common frog is also monitored by monitoring spawn development and pond environment. Invertebrates: monitoring includes butterfly monitoring, based on the Butterfly Monitoring Scheme protocol; pit fall trap sampling of ground predators and spiders; night counts of moths using the Rothamsted Insect Survey methodology; spittle bug nymph density and colour morph sampling; and tipulid larvae extraction.

The data is sent to CEH Merlewood where it is checked and transferred into a centralised database managed by the ECN Central Coordinating Unit (CCU) incorporating data from all ECN sites across the UK. Butterfly data is provided to the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme and the phenological information collected is sent to the UK Phenology Network.
