Sublittoral Monitoring Trials of Sarn Badrig Reef (1997 - 1998)
The data was captured in order to assess the suitability of the biotope classification monitoring method trialled. Sublittoral monitoring trials were done to investigate the extent of biotopes on Sarn Badrig reef- the most extensive of three Sarnau reefs within Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau SAC. In total three surveys were been carried out to investigate the biotopes present. 1) A 1998 survey to evaluate the deployment of divers for measuring the extent of the Sarnau reef biotopes. 2) A 1999 survey of Sarn Badrig reef using quadrat methodology. 3) A 1999 transect survey of the reef.

Survey 1: A 1998 survey to evaluate the deployment of divers for measuring the extent of the Sarnau reef biotopes. A shot line was deployed from which divers reeled-out a 50m tape from a pole. The pole was designed to measure a fixed transect width. Two transect locations were chosen to include the full range of broad habitats present. Four broad trial zones were identified and in each, three sampling points were randomly selected. Species and abundances were recorded in-situ using standard protocol. Survey 2: A 1999 survey of Sarn Badrig reef using quadrat methodology. The initial survey deployed four pairs of divers to map out habitat features of the area surrounding a fixed station. Four quadrats were placed by an expert algologist to represent the range of variability in the community composition within the biotope present. At each, species were recorded by seven diving surveyors, who recorded individual counts, % areas of cover and 'cell frequency'. The species data recorded in Marine Recorder only includes the individual counts of species. Survey 3: A 1999 transect survey of the reef. Stratified random selection of sites were investigated using a `roll-out` transect technique. Three main `sites` were surveyed comprising strings of sampling stations in lines perpendicular to the reef crest: - one on the seaward limit of the reef, one mid-reef and another across the eastern third of the reef. Records were made using Marine Nature Conservation Review (MNCR) abundance scales.
