Intertidal Monitoring of Tide-Swept Boulder Habitat in the Menai Strait and Conwy Bay Special Area of Conservation (SAC) 2007
There were two purposes for this data capture. Firstly, to establish the reference condition from which to establish conservation objectives; and to be able to take account of natural changes in the appropriate management of the features of the Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Secondly, to repeat survey of sites surveyed in 2005 to further test and develop monitoring methodology and collect monitoring data. Menai Strait and Conwy Bay SAC is designated for five Annex 1 habitats; Sandbanks which are slightly covered by sea water all the time, Mudflats and sandflats not covered by seawater at low tide, reefs, large shallow inlets and bays; and submerged or partially submerged sea caves. Intertidal mudflats and sandflats in this location include a variety of biotopes, many of which are present on the large sediment flat of Traeth Lafan. Intertidal reefs include a large variety of biotopes, with tide-swept bedrock, boulder and cobble habitats particularly well represented. This dataset includes the results of an intertidal monitoring survey carried out on the tide-swept boulder habitat just south of Britannia Bridge during September 2007.

The methodology used was as follows. 5 stations were placed at intervals of 70-100 m along the shore at the Britannia Bridge site with their positions uploaded to handheld GPS. 5 boulders were selected for survey at each station using set criteria. Each boulder was surveyed and results were recorded on a recording form (upper surfaces and under surfaces of the boulders were recorded separately on either side of the form). Data captured included: - Digital photographs of the upper and under surface; - Length and width of the boulder, - Description of underlying subtrata (including a record of whether or not it was anoxic) - Assessment of whether the boulder had been turned - Records of presence or absence of the conspicuous species (aggregate taxa and individual species and genera) - Estimates of percentage cover for algae and other cover species - Presence of mobile animals and hydroids etc

Phase 1 surveys of intertidal habitats in the SAC were carried out in the SAC between 1999 and 2003 (Brazier et al. 2007), providing detailed mapping of the intertidal biotopes with some information on characterizing species. The report associated with this dataset is as follows: Moore, J. 2009 Across Wales intertidal SAC monitoring Menai Strait and Conwy Bay SAC September 2007.
