Intertidal Monitoring of Sabellaria Reef in Cardigan Bay Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) 2007
The Habitats Directive establishes that the management of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) should aim to achieve the favourable conservation status of habitat and species features listed within its Annex I and Annex II. For SACs in Wales, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) is therefore required to report on a regular basis on whether features are in favourable conservation status. Honeycomb reef worm Sabellaria alveolata is a sedentary, tube-dwelling polychaete most commonly found on rocky substrata in the lower shore and shallow subtidal zones of marine and estuarine areas. The honeycomb reef worm is a UK BAP Priority Habitat (BAP habitats are now Habitats of Principal Importance/Priority Habitats). Cardigan SAC is designated for a number of features, including Bottlenosed dolphins, Sandbanks, Reefs and Sea Caves, and some intertidal features including areas of bedrock and boulder/cobble habitats and many areas are characterised by biogenic reef formed by the honeycomb reef worm Sabellaria alveolata. This dataset includes the results of a survey of the biogenic reef formed by the honeycomb reef worm Sabellaria alveolata at two sites within Cardigan Bay SAC. The purpose of this data capture was to establish sites for long term monitoring and collect baseline/reference data using appropriate methods. This is a high quality survey carried out by an experienced team of marine biologists.

Methodology used was a modified version of the transect survey methodology developed for Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau SAC (2008). Existing maps of Sabellaria extent were used to define the survey area within which a series of 11 transects were drawn at 50 m intervals approximately perpendicular to the coastline. Along each transect notes were made on habitat, community and condition/age of Sabellaria reef. Photographs were also taken to illustrate habitat and condition of the reef. 1 or 2 stations were used per transect for quadrat surveys. At each survey station a gridded 0.25m2 quadrat was placed randomly 15 times within a radius of 10m. Digital photographs were taken of each quadrat and a full survey was carried out on the first 5 quadrats to record % cover of standing water, total Sabellaria and live Sabellaria, key species/taxa, other typical fauna and flora. The other 10 quadrats were used to carry out additional recording of Sabellaria cover. The extent of the reef was mapped using the track function of handheld GPS units. Phase 1 surveys of intertidal habitats in the SAC were carried out in the SAC in 1996 and 2003 (Brazier et al. 2007), providing detailed mapping of the intertidal biotopes with some information on characterizing species. Surveys of Sabellaria reefs in the SAC were carried out for CCW in 2004 (Boyes et al. 2008). Additional mapping of Sabellaria reef extent at Aberaeron was carried out by CMACS Ltd. (sub-contracted by Atkins Ltd.) in August 2006 as part of an Environmental Assessment for proposed Aberaeron North Beach Coastal Defence Work (unpublished data provided by Atkins Ltd.).
