Intertidal Monitoring of Sediment Transects in Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries Special Area of Conservation (SAC) 2007
The Habitats Directive establishes that the management of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) should aim to achieve the favourable conservation status of habitat and species features listed within its Annex I and Annex II. For SACs in Wales, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) is therefore required to report on a regular basis on whether features are in favourable conservation status. Between 1999 and 2001, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) undertook a Phase 1 biotope mapping survey of the intertidal areas of the Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries Special Area of Conservation (SAC). This dataset includes the results of surveys of the biotopes present along eight transects around Carmarthen Bay. Thirteen transects had been surveyed with a very similar methodology in 2005. This survey repeated one of those transects and established seven new transects. The purpose of this data capture was to provide sufficient information to identify the biotopes present and describe the composition of the communities; and to establish sites for long-term monitoring and collect baseline/reference data using appropriate methods.

A modified version of standard Marine Nature Conservation Review (MNCR) Phase 2 methodology was utilised. 20 transects (13 surveyed initially in 2005 and seven surveyed for the first time in 2007) were pre-selected by CCW to represent the variety of sediment biotopes present. Using handheld GPS the surveyors walked down the transect lines making notes on substrata/habitats and deciding how many biotopes were present. A GPS fix was taken at a station position within each of those biotopes which was considered to best represent the biotope. One or more (max 3) of the sediment stations were selected for quantitative core sampling (usually biotopes most vulnerable to change from anthropogenic activity and which represented a significant portion of the transect). Five core samples were taken from each of the selected sampling stations for macrofauna and granulometry analyses and a site description and photograph were taken at each station. Two in-situ bivalve count methodologies were also trialled opportunistically during the surveys of 4 transects- an estimation of the numbers of Scrobicularia plana and an estimate of the densities of Cerastoderma edule, Macoma balthica and Angulus tenuis. Between 1999 and 2001, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) undertook a Phase 1 biotope mapping survey (Wyn et al. 2006) of the intertidal areas of the Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
