Surveys of Harbours, Rias and Estuaries in Southern Britain - Milford Haven and Daugleddau
The Nature Conservancy Council commissioned the Field Studies Council to undertake studies of the marine inlets of southern Britain, including harbours, rias and estuaries, in order to gain information on the ecosystems present. The study took place between 1985 and 1988 and covered 24 inlets. This dataset contains the results of a survey of Milford Haven and the estuary of the Rivers Cleddau (Daugleddau estuary). The purpose of this dataset was to describe areas in terms of their physical attributes; to review the results of previous studies; to review marine resource usage e.g. fisheries, diving activites etc; to catalogue available information and, to collect information and photographs on the habitats and species present. The field survey specifically aimed to collect further information on habitats and species where little or no previous work had been carried out, in areas of known or likely nature conservation importance, or where rare or unusual species may be present.

14 intertidal, 17 subtidal diving and 7 dredge sites were surveyed to investigate four main elements: 1) Epibiota of rocky and sediment shores- a systematic description was made of the abundance of species in the main habitats/communities present at different heights on the open shore. Records were also made from unusual habitats e.g. gullies, rockpools etc. Sketches of site location, site profile and important features were made and photographs taken. 2) Infauna of sediment shores- shore habitats were recorded at each site and abundance of species visible at the surface noted. A general dig for large or widely dispersed species was accompanied by sieving and laboratory analysis to identify the less conspicuous fauna. 3) Epibiota of subtidal rock and sediments- surveys were undertaken from deep to shallow water or offshore to onshore with some spot dives. A drift dive was undertaken at one location. At each survey station the habitat type was described and the abundance of conspicuous species recorded. Photographs were taken species were collected where necessary for identification purposes. 4) Infauna of subtidal sediments-sediment samples were collected at 5 sites for qualitative examination of the macro-infauna. A pipe dredge also collected sediment from each sample site.
