Skomer Island Eunicella verrucosa Survey 1985
This dataset is a collation of the results of a survey aimed at studying the population of the broad sea fan Eunicella verrucosa at Skomer Marine Reserve. The dataset also contains data on a number of other species of interest and previously unsurveyed areas of the reserve. The purpose of this data capture was: - Provide information on the distribution and abundance of E. verrucosa around Skomer and determine habitat preferences. - Investigate the size of individual E. verrucosa and the population age structure. - Study the epibionts of E. verrucosa. - Study orientation and growth form of E. verrucosa colonies in a variety of environmental conditions. The survey also aimed to tag and photograph E. verrucosa for future monitoring, record the occurrence and abundance of various species of interest and survey some additional areas around Skomer Marine Reserve for which there was little or no information.

This data forms part of the Pembrokeshire Marine Species Atlas (see separate metadata entry). Seven sites around Skomer Marine Nature Reserve were chosen for survey, largely on the basis of information collected during previous surveys. Divers swam offshore from a given point on the coast along a particular compass bearing. The habitat on which each E. verrucosa was found was noted and SMR Habitat Recording Sheets were completed for most sites with profiles drawn. An assessment of E. verrucosa abundance was made by calculating the number recorded per 30 minute dive. The maximum height and width of individual E. verrucosa was measured to the nearest centimetre and orientation was measured using wrist compasses. E. verrucosa were tagged using plastic electrical cable ties with numbers engraved. These were fixed onto side branches near to the main stem. A number of target species were searched for and their location was normally shown on profiles and habitat sketches. 3 previously unsurveyed/poorly documented areas were also surveyed. Habitat description and brief notes on conspicuous species were recorded. Plant and animal species were recorded on checklists and abundances determined and photographs were taken. Samples for unidentified plants and animals were taken for later identification.
