Marine Algae Sites in Wales: Survey and Inventory of Important and Rare Algae
Several sites around Wales have been highlighted as being of interest for their marine seaweeds, either as species rich sites or for supporting rare, scarce or Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) species. Many of these sites were designated in 2007 as provisional Important Plant Areas for Algae and all the sites are situated within marine Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) or Sites of Special Scientific Importance (SSSIs). This study was designed to provide an inventory of species at selected sites, which were highlighted as the result of previous surveys, and also to recommend methodologies for future monitoring.

The sites selected included Rhosneiger, Llanbedrog Low water lagoon, Oyster Bank (Pwllheli), Glanllynnau, Sarn Badrig and Tremadog Bay, and West Angle Bay. - Rhosneigr: An algae specific species inventory was undertaken at rock pools at different levels across the shore. Viewpoint photography was used to illustrate the overall distribution of Ascophyllum nodosum and other fucoid seaweeds on the rocky shore area. A series of monitoring was also conducted on a population of Cystoseira tamariscifolia and other conspicuous species was undertaken, in an area colonised by Sargassum muticum by recording overall percentage cover. - Llanbedrog Low water lagoon: An algae specific species inventory was undertaken during a low spring tide. - The Oyster Bank (Pwllheli): A SCUBA diving survey was conducted for the Barbed Twig Weed (Anotrichium barbatum). An inventory of other species found at the site was made in situ and samples taken for laboratory examination. This survey was also used for a Phase 2 descriptive of the site. - Glanllynnau: SCUBA diving surveys were conducted in both sites to collect a species inventory of the sublittoral fringe and shallow subtidal area. - Sarn Badrig and Tremadog Bay: the work carried out related to quality control of ongoing long term monitoring of the subtidal algal communities. A total of 4 dives recording dives were undertaken and the cumulative number of species were recorded over a period of 1 hour for each dive. - West Angle Bay: An inventory of seaweeds was obtained from 7 habitats selected shore habitats.

The project references work carried out by Brodie et al (2007) " Important Plant Areas for algae: a provisional review of sites and areas of importance for algae in the UK. Plantlife International" and CCW's Across Wales Reef Monitoring: Sarn Badrig and Tremadog Bay). It also contributes to CCW's marine intertidal and subtidal survey and monitoring program. The results of the Sarn Badrig and Tremadog Bay are reported in Holt R. Irving R. Stanwell-Smith D. CCW Cross Wales Reef Monitoring. Sarn Badrig and Tremadog Bay 2007 - 2011 (in draft).
