Intertidal Monitoring of Saltmarsh Extent in Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) 2009
The Habitats Directive establishes that the management of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) should aim to achieve the favourable conservation status of habitat and species features listed within its Annex I and Annex II. For SACs in Wales, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) is therefore required to report on a regular basis on whether features are in favourable conservation status. Carmarthen Bay SAC was designated for five Annex I intertidal habitat features: Estuaries; Mudflats and sandflats not covered by seawater at low tide; Large shallow inlets and bays; Salicornia and other annuals colonising mud and sand; Atlantic salt meadows (Glauco- Puccinellietalia maritimae). Specific areas of interest include saltmarsh fringing the Burry Inlet. The Habitats Directive establishes that the management of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) should aim to achieve the favourable conservation status of habitat and species features listed within its Annex I and Annex II. Data was captured to, map the 2009 boundary for comparison with previous boundaries; record patches away from the main saltmarsh; take viewpoint photographs to enable a quick comparison of boundaries on future visits. All surveys completed by professional and experienced marine field surveyors. Data quality and confidence considered high.

The saltmarsh along the northern shore of the River Loughor was mapped between the bridge at Loughor and Penrhyn Gwyn. Three surveyors walked along the edge of the dense marsh (Spartina anglica and Salicornia) with a handheld GPS unit automatically taking a track fix every few seconds (typically 5 seconds). Outlying clumps of marsh were recorded as target notes. Indentations in the saltmarsh boundary were only mapped if believed to be a significant feature (anything over 25 m in width). Small inlets, bumps and kinks were ignored and a resolution of 25 m was mapped with a straight line mapped across the indent. Mapping the boundary on the Llanrhidian Marshes on the southern shore required a quad bike as the area to be covered was much greater. A small area was mapped by quad bike at Salthouse Point during the survey, following the same protocol as outlined above. The remaining and much more extensive boundary between Salthouse Point and Berges Island was mapped in early March 2010 by M. Farleigh (student in association with CCW). In addition to the mapping, viewpoint photographs from positions recorded by GPS were taken at five points on either side of the estuary. This survey repeats some work completed in 2004 by IECS (Boyes and Brazier 2008).
