Intertidal Monitoring of Boulders Habitat in the Menai Strait and Colwyn Bay Special Area of Conservation (SAC) 2009
The Habitats Directive establishes that the management of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) should aim to achieve the favourable conservation status of habitat and species features listed within its Annex I and Annex II. For SACs in Wales, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) is therefore required to report on a regular basis on whether features are in favourable conservation status. To do this CCW has developed a programme of feature condition monitoring. In Menai Strait & Conwy Bay SAC the relevant Annex I intertidal habitat features are Mudflats and sandflats not covered by seawater at low tide and Reefs. Specific areas of interest include areas of tide-swept bedrock and boulders and areas of tide-swept Fucus serratus on mixed sediment along the Menai Strait. The overriding objective of the survey was to establish the reference condition for the Menai Strait & Conwy Bay SAC, using established monitoring stations (and establishing additional monitoring stations) to describe natural and unnatural changes in the communities. This will enable the development of conservation objectives for the appropriate management of the features of the SAC. This data was collected to build on the surveys conducted in 2005, 2007 and 2008 to further test and develop monitoring methodology and collect monitoring data.

A survey strategy and methodology for the Menai Strait tide-swept boulder sites was developed by ASML and CCW for the 2007 survey and expanded to Felinheli for the 2008 survey. Tide-swept boulder habitats which had been studied in 2005 (both sites) and 2007 (Britannia Bridge only) were surveyed. In-situ recording of all species on a minimum of 5 boulders at each sampling stations was undertaken. Boulders were previously studied at Britannia Bridge in 2005 and 2007 and at Felinheli in 2007.
