Intertidal Monitoring of the Biotope SLR.FserX.T in the Menai Strait and Colwyn Bay Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) 2009
The Habitats Directive establishes that the management of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) should aim to achieve the favourable conservation status of habitat and species features listed within its Annex I and Annex II. For SACs in Wales, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) is therefore required to report on a regular basis on whether features are in favourable conservation status. In the Menai Strait and Conwy Bay SAC the relevant Annex I intertidal habitat features are mudflats and sandflats not covered by seawater at low tide, and reefs. Specific areas of interest include areas of tide-swept bedrock and boulders and areas of tide-swept Fucus serratus on mixed sediment along the Menai Strait. The purpose of this in-situ survey was to locate specific tide-swept Fucus serratus zones and measure the width of the zone, percentage of Fucus serratus within the zone and information on epibionts. This in turn provided a baseline for future condition monitoring and helped establish a methodology for intertidal surveying.

Tide-swept Fucus serratus (FserX.T) biotope was surveyed at two locations. A methodology was developed for the survey, focussing on the epibiota present on the Fucus serratus thalli using random quadrat recording.
