Samplo craidd gwaddod o wely Morwellt (zostera) ac ardaloedd gwaddodi ym Mhorth Dinllaen
As part of the management of the Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau Special Area of Conservation (SAC), the SAC Officer has been working with the National Trust, local fishermen, boat owners and others to look at options to reduce the impact of moorings on the seagrass (Zostera marina) bed at Porth Dinllaen, North Wales.
This is a joint project between Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) and Gwynedd County Council as part of the Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau SAC. As part of the Porth Dinllaen seagrass project a variety of studies are being undertaken to secure an appropriate baseline to establish a detailed picture of the current condition of the seagrass bed that can be used as a reference point to monitor recovery in the future as the project proceeds. These were conducted to aid in the management of the seagrass bed (Zostera marina) present, listed as an important feature under Regulation 35 for the Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau Special Area of Conservation. This project was a component of a much larger venture which aims to better understand the local ecology and biology of Porth Dinllaen seagrass bed, with an ultimate goal of developing more seagrass friendly moorings and management techniques.
The project has been let in 4 stages:
1) The core and sediment samples and field notes were collected by MES on the 10th October
2) The cores were sent to Thomson Unicomarine for infauna and sediment analysis (By CCW)
3) The species data was sent to MES analysed in PRIMER (Paid by GCC)
4) The analysed data was entered into Marine Recorder under the PKC data capture contract

A total of 24 subtidal infaunal sediment cores and 8 sediment particle analysis cores have been collected from three different habitats within the area of the Porth Dinllaen seagrass bed: -mooring scar areas (3 sample locations with 3 replicate infaunal cores and 1 sediment core at each location), -seagrass bed areas with good seagrass cover (3 sample locations with 3 replicate infaunal cores and 1 sediment core at each location) -sediment areas outside of the seagrass bed and mooring scars (2 sample locations with 3 replicate infaunal cores and 1 sediment core at each location) In addition to the core data, diver observations of sediment composition, sediment features and characteristics, and epifauna have been collected for each sample location. The aims of these cores were to assess any significant difference between the infaunal communities and sediment profiles of these three habitat types.
