Data'n ymwneud a monitro llysywod pendoll ar gyfer Afon Cleddau (2012)
River lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis), brook lamprey (Lampetra planeri), and sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) are listed in Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive (Council Directive 92/43/EEC on the Conservation of Natural Habitats and of Wild Fauna and Flora). Six rivers in Wales are designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) for these species.
The River Cleddau, one of the westernmost river systems in Britain, can be broadly divided into its Eastern and Western arms. Assessments of species composition, distribution, abundance, and size-class structure are of particular importance in determining conservation status and condition.
The sampling strategy for the monitoring programme for sea, river, and brook lamprey followed the protocols developed for the LIFE in UK Rivers project. The survey was undertaken to assess the population attribute of the brook lamprey, river lamprey, and sea lamprey features of the River Cleddau SAC for the second Habitats Directive reporting cycle (2007-2012).
A total of 25 survey sites were sampled, comprising 12 sites in the Eastern Cleddau and 13 sites in the Western Cleddau, Pembrokeshire.

Lamprey population surveys and condition assessments were previously carried out by CCW in 2003 (Harvey and Cowx, 2003) and 2005 (Campbell et al., 2005).
The field survey was conducted in 2012 by Environment Agency staff using standard electrofishing methodologies. Condition assessments were undertaken using the JNCC Common Standards Monitoring Guidance for Freshwater Fauna.
Quantitative quadrat surveys were carried out in both optimal (very silty) and sub-optimal (more rocky) habitats. Electrofishing techniques were used within 1 m² quadrats to encourage lamprey to emerge from the silt, rather than stunning and trapping them within the sediment.
Quadrats in optimal habitats were sampled three times, while quadrats in sub-optimal habitats were sampled once only. The original dataset contains both positive and negative samples.
Confidence in the dataset is considered high.
