Intertidal Monitoring of Rocky Reefs in Pembrokeshire Marine Special Area of Conservation (SAC) 2007-2010
The Habitats Directive establishes that the management of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) should aim to achieve the favourable conservation status of habitat and species features listed within its Annex I and Annex II. For SACs in Wales, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) is therefore required to report on a regular basis on whether features are in favourable conservation status. In Pembrokeshire Marine SAC the relevant Annex I intertidal habitat features include Reefs. The specific area sub-feature of interest covered here are intertidal rocky reefs at six sites in Milford Haven together with one site at Nolton Haven in St Bride’s Bay and another site at Peny-Holt on the Castlemartin peninsula. The purpose of this data capture was to undertake quantitative monitor of the biota colonising sloping emersed bedrock and colonising rockpools.

Development of a survey strategy and methodology for the fixed quadrats was carried out by ASML and CCW. Field survey equipment provided by ASML and CCW included handheld GPS navigators (various makes and models, all set to British National Grid and OSGB36 datum), digital cameras (various makes and models, all set to high resolution and local time), tape measures and first aid kits. On each sampling occasion, the survey teams were led by surveyors who were very experienced in rocky shore field work and were sometimes assisted by less experienced workers who helped with logistics. At each survey site records were taken from threes shore heights; Upper, Mid and Lower shore. Within each shore zone, the four 1 m x 1 m quadrats were relocated. The quadrats are sited in homogeneous areas of inclined rock (where possible) avoiding rock pools and large fissures. Within each 1 m2 quadrat, presence/absence data were recorded for all conspicuous species using a 25 cell grid (20 cm x 20 cm cells). This gave a frequency score of between 0 and 25 for each species. Organisms were identified to species level where possible with specimens being returned to the laboratory for verification where necessary.
