Across Wales Drop-Down Video Monitoring: North Llŷn Special Area of Conservation (SAC) 2012
Routine drop-down video monitoring was undertaken within Pen Llŷn a'r Sarnau Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in June 2012 to support the assessment and management of protected marine habitats and species. The survey formed part of an ongoing monitoring programme within Welsh SACs and continued the collection of seabed habitat data from previous years. A total of 30 video tows were completed across circalittoral habitats around the northern Llŷn Peninsula using a high-definition video system deployed from the CCW research vessel Pedryn. Photographic stills were collected throughout the survey to support habitat validation and species identification. Survey data were analysed to identify habitats, species and biotopes, providing information on the distribution and character of seabed features within the SAC and supporting conservation management and monitoring objectives.

Survey data were collected by the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) in June 2012 using a C-Technics C-Vision Mantis HD video camera mounted on a towed sledge and deployed from the research vessel Pedryn. Thirty video tows were undertaken across circalittoral habitats within the northern part of Pen Llŷn a'r Sarnau SAC. A Canon 600D digital camera system was used to capture photographic stills at approximately eight-second intervals along each tow to assist with habitat validation, species identification and enhancement of species records.
Video footage was analysed by Marine Ecological Solutions (Marine EcoSol) using standard Marine Nature Conservation Review (MNCR)-derived survey methodologies and the JNCC Marine Habitat Classification. Quality assurance procedures included independent re-analysis of approximately 5% of video tows and verification of at least 10% of data entry records. The validated habitat, species and biotope data were entered into Marine Recorder by Marine EcoSol. Supporting spatial data, including vessel track information exported from onboard GPS systems, start and end locations, and field survey notes, were retained with the survey records. The resulting dataset contributes to the long-term monitoring programme for marine habitats within Pen Llŷn a'r Sarnau SAC and supports evidence-based conservation management.
