Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Otter in the Afon Gwyrfai and the Dyfi Estuary (2006)
The Afon Gwyrfai and Dyfi Estuary forms part of two Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) the Afon Gwyrfai a Llyn Cwellyn SAC, and the Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau / Llyn Peninsula and the Sarnau SAC. The purpose of this data capture was to report on the current and potential distribution, and breeding success of the otter within the Gwyrfai catchment and Dyfi Estuary area; identify and map actual and potential breeding habitat and feeding ponds and ditches; and, to produce performance indicators to contribute to former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW's) reporting of the condition and conservation status of the otter.

The methodology for this study is based on work carried out for the European Commission's Life Natura Programme, to investigate the ecological requirements for otter breeding (Liles, 2003). Information on otter breeding activity is derived from otter road deaths, and from reports of otter cub sightings (collected during visits to householders living close to watercourses). Possible and potential breeding sites were identified from Phase 1 maps, and by walk-over surveys of all possible sites to confirm breeding site potential. A similar method was used to locate potential amphibian feeding sites for otters. Data is based on that collected from the Otter Survey of Wales.
