Insect Survey Results for Two Brown Field Sand Quarry Sites, Borras Quarry and Marford Quarry, in North-East Wales (2013)
This dataset contains the results of insect surveys conducted at two sand quarries in north-east Wales: Borras Quarry, where 162 species were recorded, and Marford Quarry, where 145 species were recorded.
The data collected at Borras Quarry include 14 psammophilic species and 70 aculeate species. The data collected at Marford Quarry include 8 psammophilic species and 69 aculeate species.
The aim of this survey was to determine whether the sand quarries supported suitable habitat conditions for invertebrate species and to make recommendations for securing the long-term sympathetic management of these important sites.
The diversity of aculeate species recorded across both quarries to date, with a total of 135 species, ranks these sites among the most species-rich locations in Wales for this group.

Borras Quarry and Marford Quarry were each visited on several occasions to record the invertebrate species present. Survey effort focused particularly on aculeate bees, wasps, ants, beetles, and flies.
Sampling techniques included visual searches, sweep-netting, pitfall trapping, and water trapping.
The data were collected in 2013 as a continuation of work undertaken in previous years. Earlier surveys were carried out in 2012 at Borras Quarry, Fagl Lane Quarry, and Fron Haul Quarry.
