Water Quality of Riverine Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) across Wales (2006-2012).
This data collection was required as part of the water quality assessment of various Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) for the monitoring round and report cycle 2006 to 2012. Water quality targets for designated riverine features are specified under the JNCC CSM Guidance. The targets are based on routine water quality monitoring and subsequent reporting. Water quality targets are assessed based on the chemistry, biology, phosphate, suspended solids and un-ionized ammonia. The dataset details the results of water quality target testing for the following rivers and associated SACs: - Afon Gwyrfai a Llyn Cwellyn SAC - Afon Eden and Cors Goch Trawsfynydd SAC - River Dee and Bala Lake / Afon Dyfrdwy a Llyn Tegid SAC - Afon Tywi / River Tywi SAC - Afon Teifi / Afon Teifi - Afonydd Cleddau SAC - River Usk SAC - River Wye SAC - Afon Glaslyn (Meirionnydd Oakwoods SAC)

The water quality was tested based on EA General Quality Assessment (GQA) which has 4 classifications; chemistry, biology, nutrients and aesthetics. Each classification is made up of 6 grades from A (very good) to F (bad). The water quality targets can vary depending on the sensitivity of the species or habitat, and whether they are mandatory or discretionary targets. Chemistry Classification: based on dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand and ammonia. Sampling: occurred 12 times a year over 3 years Biology Classification: Based on macro-invertebrate communities. Sampling: Kick samples collected in spring and autumn, in one year out of every three. Phosphate Classification: Based on Soluble Reactive Phosphorus (SRP). Sampling: Monthly basis at chemical sampling points. Suspended Solids Classification: Based on the Freshwater Fish Directive. Sampling: Based on annual mean suspended solids. Uni-ionised ammonia Classification: Measured against the target for the river habitat as a 95-percentile. Acidity Acid sensitive units have been identified and assessed using a risk assessment based on various data sources including the Acid Water Indicator Community (AWICS) invertebrate monitoring tool, UK pH and ANC standards, and critical load exceedance maps.
