Comprehensive reassessment of Non Native Species in Welsh marinas (Marine Recorder dataset)
The dataset is part of an ongoing rapid assessments for presence/absence of marine Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) in Welsh marinas. Survey undertaken to assess the presence of non-native species in 15 marinas throughout Wales. Funding from obtained by Welsh Government Resilient Ecosystems Fund, which is administered by Natural Resources Wales (NRW). Comprehensive reassessment of non-native species on floating pontoons in Welsh marinas. The purpose of this data capture was to look at the spread of invasive non-natives in Wales and provide early warnings for new introductions with a possible view to employing eradication techniques. This metadata only covers the data held in NRWs copy of marine recorder.

A Rapid Assessment Survey was done at each marina. The available floating pontoons were split between the 3 surveyors. Each surveyor spent 1 hour searching their allocated area, examining and scraping pontoon sides, and examining any other substrates accessible from the surface e.g. ropes, buoys, fenders, kelps etc.. All 32 target Non Native Species presences and absences were noted and abundance estimated (using an abbreviated and adapted SACFORN scale where A=SA (Super abundant or abundant), F=CF (common or frequent), R=OR (occasional or rare), N=N (not-present)). Any other potential Non Native Species such as unidentified specimens, those requiring microscopical examination for species confirmation, and specimens to substantiate significant findings were relaxed, preserved and examined later in the laboratory. The majority of species were determined on site. This method focuses primarily on fouling organisms which live attached to solid substrates. Funding was obtained by Welsh Government Resilient Ecosystems Fund, which is administered by Natural Resources Wales (NRW).
