Macrofaunal Community Monitoring on Saline Lagoons across Wales
Shallow coastal lagoons are designated as a priority Annex I Habitat under the EC Habitats Directive. This dataset includes the infaunal community and species populations and sediment grain distribution data for five Welsh lagoons. Infaunal communities of three lagoons (Cemlyn, Anglesey; Pickleridge, Pembrokeshire; and Morfa Gwyllt, Gwynedd) have been annually monitored since 2006 and two lagoons (Neyland and Carew, Pembrokeshire) have been monitored since 2011. The purpose of this data capture was to assess the ecological health of invertebrate communities and population dynamics across lagoon environments, in order to infer the health and functionality of the ecosystems at each lagoon.

Annual quantitative macrofauna and sediment sampling was conducted using a hand held core or Ekman grab for surveys conducted at Cemlyn, Morfa Gwyllt and Pickleridge between 2006 and 2013. In recent years, infauna and sediment winter sampling has also been undertaken at Neyland Weir Pool and Carew Mill Pond (2011, 2012 and 2013). At all lagoons other than Morfa Gwyllt, a fixed sampling station design were chosen to capture the range of potential benthic variation that might occur due to point sources of seawater and freshwater input and to minimize the risk of widespread disturbance caused by destructive sampling. At the smaller Morfa Gwyllt site no potential input gradients were likely and so a randomised sample plot was selected. All samples were sieved over a 0.5 mm mesh in situ, preserved in 4 percent formalin solution and then transferred to a laboratory where biota were sorted and enumerated to the lowest possible taxonomic level.

Samples were analysed by Fugro Marine (formally ERT Ltd) for all years except 2012, where APEM ltd undertook the analysis. Both contractors undertook work in line with National Marine Biological Analytical Quality Control guidance.
