Macrofaunal Community Monitoring on Inlets across Wales
Large shallow inlets and bays are habitat complexes which comprise an interdependent mosaic of subtidal and intertidal habitats. Several of these habitat types (1140 Mudflats and sandflats not covered by sea water at low tide, 1110 Sandbanks which are slightly covered by sea water all the time and 1170 Reefs) are listed as Annex I habitats in their own right. In Wales inlets occur in a number of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs). This includes Carmarthen Bay and Estuary SAC which is located off the south Wales, Pembrokeshire Marine SAC which is located around Pembrokeshire, south Wales; and Pen Llyn a’r Sarnau SAC which is located on the south side of the Llyn Peninsula north-west Wales. The purpose of this data capture was to examine the indication of anthropogenic change on macro-faunal communities around shallow inlets and bays. This dataset comprises of infaunal species counts, sediment grain size and chemical compositions.

Quantitative sediment sampling was undertaken at within the Milford Haven and Three Rivers inlets using a using a 0.1 m2 Day Grab. Five replicates grabs were taken at each station for macro faunal sampling; at the majority of locations sediment was sampled directly from the grab used to sample macro fauna with a core. Also a separate grab was taken to sample the sediment Chemistry. Metals were sampled with a plastic scoop and plastic container, whereas Organics were sampled with a metal scoop and acid washed glass container.
