Monitoring Invertebrate features on Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs): assessing and reviewing the status of the troglobitic spider Porrhomma rosenhaueri in Ogof y Ci and Lesser Garth Cave, South Wales in 2017
Porrhomma rosenhaueri is a rare cave-dwelling spider with a highly restricted distribution in the UK, known only from Ogof y Ci near Merthyr Tydfil and Lesser Garth Cave near Cardiff. This survey was undertaken to determine whether the species remained present in the Ogof y Ci cave system and to assess the feasibility of establishing a Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) protocol for long-term population monitoring. The survey also revisited the existing CSM monitoring programme for Lesser Garth Cave to assess the condition of the spider population and the ecological condition of the cave habitat. Surveys undertaken in 2017 confirmed the continued presence of Porrhomma rosenhaueri at both sites, including the first record from Ogof y Ci since 1971. Results indicate that both cave systems support important cave invertebrate assemblages and remain significant sites for the conservation of this species.

Survey data were collected through visual searches of suitable cave habitats. Two site visits were undertaken during September and October 2017 to survey Ogof y Ci and other accessible sites within the Nant Glais Caves SSSI for Porrhomma rosenhaueri and associated cave fauna. The species was recorded within the Ogof y Ci cave system, providing the first confirmed record since 1971 and enabling the development of recommendations for future monitoring. In October 2017, the established Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) protocol for Lesser Garth Cave was repeated to assess the status and distribution of the spider population within the cave. Records of spiders, webs and habitat condition were collected and compared with previous surveys to evaluate population status and support ongoing conservation monitoring.
