Saproxylic Invertebrate Survey of Wye Valley Woodlands Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in 2017
This dataset was collected to improve understanding of the saproxylic invertebrate fauna of the Wye Valley Woodlands Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Despite the significance of the SAC, relatively little information was previously available on its saproxylic invertebrate assemblages, although the area is known to support a number of nationally rare and threatened species, including the lime bark beetle (Ernoporus tiliae) and Cosnard's net-winged beetle (Erotides cosnardi). The survey forms the first phase of a wider programme of work aimed at producing a comprehensive inventory of saproxylic invertebrates across the SAC. Survey results demonstrated the considerable importance of the Wye Valley Woodlands for saproxylic invertebrates, recording 39 species, including seven Nationally Scarce species. The findings improve understanding of species distribution and habitat requirements and will help inform future woodland management and conservation within the SAC.

Survey work was undertaken during autumn 2017 within the Fiddlers Elbow, Pierce, Alcove and Piercefield Woods, and Blackcliff/Wyndcliff Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), which form part of the Wye Valley Woodlands SAC. Data were collected through targeted visual searches of saproxylic habitats, supplemented by sweep-netting, beating of vegetation, and hand-searching techniques. Survey effort focused on identifying saproxylic invertebrate species, particularly those of national or local conservation significance, and recording associated habitat features. Species records from the surveys were collated to contribute to a provisional inventory of the saproxylic fauna of the SAC. The resulting dataset was used to assess the quality and conservation importance of the woodland habitats and to support the development of future management guidance for the SAC.
