The status and distribution of the ground beetle Leistus montanus in 2017 at its historic sites in Wales.
The 2017 survey was undertaken to determine the current status and distribution of the Endangered ground beetle Leistus montanus in Wales. Historically recorded from a small number of montane sites in Wales, including Cadair Idris, Y Lliwedd on Yr Wyddfa, and Carnedd y Ddelw, the species had not been confirmed from Wales in recent years. Surveys were conducted between May and October 2017 at all known Welsh locations to assess its continued presence. A total of five adult beetles were recorded, with two individuals found on Cadair Idris and three on Y Lliwedd. No specimens were recorded from Carnedd y Ddelw or Eglwyseg Rocks. The survey confirmed that Leistus montanus remains present in Wales but appears to be restricted to a small number of upland scree habitats.

Survey records were used to assess the current distribution of Leistus montanus, evaluate the validity of previous records, and identify sites supporting suitable habitat for the species. The resulting dataset provides updated information on the conservation status and distribution of Leistus montanus in Wales.
