WINS Natural Flood Management: Opportunities for Bog Restoration
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature Based Solution or WINS project (Previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities to carry out land management interventions to increase ecosystem service delivery in a number of key policy areas. There is an accompanying User Guide to assist in the use of these datasets. A full list of datasets used and data limitations can be found in the project technical report. What the map shows: This map shows opportunities for bog restoration. The main opportunity for bog restoration is the restoration of existing bog habitat currently in degraded condition. Additionally, peat soils under coniferous plantations are highlighted, which can be a potential opportunity, particularly if the peat soil is in good condition. Existing bog habitat is shown for reference. Hard engineering solutions to flooding are not considered.

How the map has been created: Degraded and existing bogs have been identified from the national Phase 1 habitat map, whilst areas of conifers on peat have been taken from the afforested peat project carried out by NRW. Catchment zones (as mapped for this project) and the predicted viability of peat under a climate change scenario were considered practical constraints for opportunities to restore bog habitats for NFM benefits, while opportunities falling onto common land have been highlighted as requiring additional consideration. This dataset was produced for NRW under contract by Environment Systems Ltd.
