Seilwaith Gwyrdd Trefol: Galw am Fannau Gwyrdd Trefol - Llygredd Aer
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature-based Solutions (WINS) project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities for land management interventions that enhance ecosystem service delivery across a range of key policy areas. An accompanying User Guide is available to support the use of these datasets, and a full list of source datasets and data limitations can be found in the project technical report.
This dataset identifies areas with a demand for greenspace based on levels of air pollution, measured using annual average PM2.5 concentrations. Demand is mapped along a colour gradient from dark green to dark brown, with increasing demand determined by a combination of three factors: the severity of air pollution, population density, and levels of deprivation.

The dataset was created using annual average PM2.5 monitoring data across Wales. Areas with PM2.5 concentrations greater than 8 µg/m³ were classified as having the poorest air quality and, therefore, the highest demand for greenspace interventions. Areas with PM2.5 concentrations between 6 µg/m³ and 8 µg/m³ were classified as having a moderate level of demand, while areas with lower concentrations were not considered demand areas.
This demand layer was combined with population density and Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) data to derive an overall demand score for air quality improvement measures. For the WIMD, the two most deprived categories (ranks 1 to 382) were assigned the highest priority, while ranks 383 to 573 were assigned a moderate priority. Areas with lower levels of deprivation were not assigned additional priority based on deprivation.
Population density, derived from the most recent census data, was classified into five groups using Jenks natural breaks. The two most densely populated classes were assigned the highest priority, the middle class was assigned a moderate priority, and the remaining classes were not assigned additional priority based on population density.
This dataset was produced for NRW by Environment Systems Ltd.

Data gaps and limitations: Air quality data accessible for this project reported on annual averages only. However, guidelines on air quality also consider the number of times per year that a critical, health-relevant cut-off value is exceeded. The addition of exceedance values could extend the demand space.
