WINS Woodland Planting: Opportunities for Woodland Planting for Rapid Turnover Forest
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature-based Solutions (WINS) project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities for land management interventions that enhance ecosystem service delivery across a range of key policy areas. An accompanying User Guide is available to support the use of these datasets, and a full list of source datasets and data limitations can be found in the project technical report.
This dataset identifies areas where rapid-rotation woodland could be established to support biomass and timber production. Opportunity areas have been prioritised according to their suitability for productive woodland management and timber growth.

Biophysical suitability for woodland planting was assessed using Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) attribute data. As these woodlands are intended for commercial management and harvesting, areas with gentler slopes, where plantation establishment and management are more practical, were identified as priority opportunities. Areas at higher elevations and/or on aspects exposed to prevailing winds were assigned a lower priority, as timber quality may be reduced by stunted or uneven tree growth.
Within the resulting opportunity area, sensitivities such as acid-sensitive catchments were identified. Constraints were then applied to exclude areas where woodland planting is unsuitable or undesirable due to existing land use, environmental considerations or legislative restrictions. The remaining areas represent the final opportunity space for rapid-rotation woodland planting for biomass and timber production.
This dataset was produced for NRW by Environment Systems Ltd.
- Additional Information
-
Data gaps and limitations: National Phase 1 dataset is likely out of date in many places. The model does not consider Ffridd areas as a sensitivity or constraint.
