WINS Woodland Planting: Opportunities for Community Woodlands
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature-based Solutions (WINS) project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities for land management interventions that enhance ecosystem service delivery across a range of key policy areas. An accompanying User Guide is available to support the use of these datasets, and a full list of source datasets and data limitations can be found in the project technical report.
This dataset identifies opportunities for the creation of community woodlands, alongside existing accessible and inaccessible woodlands located within 2 km of urban areas. These woodland categories are classified according to three demand groups: areas with high concentrations of children, areas with high levels of deprivation, and areas where both factors coincide, indicating locations where large numbers of children live in communities experiencing high levels of deprivation.

Urban areas were identified and assessed to determine where high concentrations of children and/or high levels of deprivation occur. Opportunities for community woodland creation were identified using the same methodology applied to the carbon sequestration opportunity mapping. From this opportunity area, only sites larger than 1 ha and located within 2 km of urban areas were retained. The resulting opportunities were then classified according to the identified demand categories.
Demand was determined using a combination of child population and deprivation indicators. Areas were categorised according to whether they had a high concentration of children, high levels of deprivation, or a combination of both factors.
Existing woodland within or adjacent to urban areas was also identified and mapped separately. Woodland areas were derived from the Phase 1 Habitat Map and classified as either accessible or inaccessible based on information from the Woods for People project.
This dataset was produced for NRW by Environment Systems Ltd.
- Additional Information
-
Data gaps and limitations: Woodland accessibility is based solely on woodland areas identified within the Woods for People dataset. The National Phase 1 Habitat Map may be out of date in some areas. All data gaps and limitations associated with the carbon sequestration opportunity mapping may also apply to this dataset.
This map does not identify sensitivities to woodland planting, such as common land. Opportunity areas with sensitivities are shown in the carbon sequestration dataset, which should be consulted alongside this map when assessing the suitability of woodland planting proposals.
Some processing was undertaken using the shapefile format. As a result, areas that are separate in the source data may, in some cases, appear to be connected in the rasterised output.
