WINS Woodland Planting: Opportunities for Planting Large/Medium/Small Woodlands
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature-based Solutions (WINS) project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities for land management interventions that enhance ecosystem service delivery across a range of key policy areas. An accompanying User Guide is available to support the use of these datasets, and a full list of source datasets and data limitations can be found in the project technical report.
This dataset identifies areas suitable for woodland planting and classifies opportunities according to woodland size and the estimated number of landowners involved. Opportunity areas are grouped into large, medium and small woodland categories, providing an indication of the relative ease or complexity of delivering woodland creation projects.

The opportunity space for woodland planting was identified using the same methodology applied to the carbon sequestration opportunity mapping. Information from LPIS Customer Reference Numbers (CRNs) was then used as a proxy for land ownership. Contiguous areas of woodland planting opportunity were classified into three size categories: large woodland opportunities (greater than 500 ha), medium woodland opportunities (5 ha to 500 ha), and small woodland opportunities (less than 5 ha). For each opportunity area, the number of unique CRNs was counted to estimate the number of landowners who may need to be involved in woodland creation.
Opportunity strength was assessed based on the estimated number of landowners associated with each area, reflecting the likelihood of securing agreement for woodland creation. In general, opportunities involving fewer landowners were considered more achievable than those requiring agreement across a larger number of landholdings.
Land ownership has been approximated using LPIS Customer Reference Numbers (CRNs) and may not always correspond directly to individual landowners. As the opportunity mapping is based on the same methodology as the carbon sequestration dataset, the data gaps, assumptions and limitations associated with that dataset also apply. This analysis provides a strategic indication of the potential complexity of woodland creation projects and should not be used as a substitute for detailed land ownership assessments or legal investigations.
