WINS Water Quality: Opportunities for Reducing Faecal Coliform Pollution
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature-based Solutions (WINS) project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities for land management interventions that enhance ecosystem service delivery across a range of key policy areas. An accompanying User Guide is available to support the use of these datasets, and a full list of source datasets and data limitations can be found in the project technical report.
This dataset identifies areas where management interventions could reduce the risk of faecal coliforms entering coastal and transitional waters, as well as rivers and lakes. The management options considered include fencing and/or hedgerow planting to prevent direct livestock access to watercourses, and woodland planting to create riparian woodland or drainage channel shelter belts. Opportunities located within catchments upstream of water bodies with known faecal coliform issues are identified as priority areas for intervention.

The dataset was created by identifying opportunity areas for each management intervention and combining them into a single layer that summarises opportunities to reduce the risk of faecal coliforms entering water bodies.
Opportunities for fencing and hedgerow planting were identified by locating land likely to be used for grazing that is directly adjacent to watercourses, including minor drainage channels. These areas were considered suitable for interventions that restrict direct livestock access to water.
Within these areas, land that is biophysically suitable for tree planting and not subject to woodland planting constraints was identified as an opportunity for the establishment of riparian woodland or drainage channel shelter belts. Opportunities located upstream of water bodies known to be affected by faecal coliform contamination were identified as priority areas for intervention.
This dataset was produced for NRW by Environment Systems Ltd.
- Additional Information
-
Data gaps and limitations: The National Phase 1 Habitat Map is likely to be out of date in some areas. The model does not consider groundwater pathways and therefore may not identify all routes by which faecal coliforms can enter water bodies. Urban areas and sewerage infrastructure are also not considered as potential sources of faecal coliform contamination. The analysis focuses on identifying opportunities to intercept or reduce the transport of faecal coliforms to water bodies and does not assess opportunities to reduce faecal coliform inputs at source.
