WINS Water Quality: Opportunities for Reducing Faecal Coliform Pollution
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature Bases Solution or WINS project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities to carry out land management interventions to increase ecosystem service delivery in a number of key policy areas. What the map shows: The map shows areas where management action could be taken to reduce the risk for faecal coliforms entering into coastal and transitional waterbodies, as well as lakes and rivers. Management opportunities considered are fencing and/or hedges to prevent direct access to water courses by livestock, and woodland planting to form riparian or drainage channel shelter belts. For all opportunity types, those falling into upslope areas of sites with a known problem with faecal coliforms are considered priority opportunities.

How the map has been created: The map has been created by identifying the overall opportunity space for each management option under consideration, and then combining them into a single layer summarising the opportunities to reduce the risk of faecal coliforms entering the water column. The opportunities for the individual management types have been identified by the following process: Identify land likely to be used for grazing that is directly adjacent to water courses, including minor drainage channels. In these areas, there is an opportunity for fencing and/or planting of hedgerows to prevent direct access to the river by livestock. Within the land adjacent to watercourses identified above, identify land biophysically suitable for tree planting, and where there are no other constraints to woodland planting. In these areas, wooded shelter belts or riparian woodland can be established. This dataset was produced for NRW under contract by Environment Systems Ltd.

Data gaps and limitations: National Phase 1 dataset is likely out of date in many places The model does not consider ground water The model does not consider urban areas or sewerage infrastructure as sources of faecal coliforms The model looks at intercepting the transport of faecal coliforms into waterbodies, but does not consider opportunities to reduce input of faecal coliforms at point source.
