Welsh Lakes Survey and Monitoring
This is a compilation of lake survey and monitoring data carried out by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and it’s predecessor bodies Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) and Environment Agency Wales (EAW) since 1992. It consists mainly of aquatic plant (macrophyte) surveys supported by water chemistry and dissolved oxygen, temperature and Secchi depth data. The datasets cover a wide range of lakes in Wales focussing on protected sites (Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) lakes) and on larger waterbodies monitored for Water Framework Directive (WFD). A selection of lakes that are not protected but likely to be of biodiversity importance are also included.

Earlier surveys used a mapping approach but since around 2004 a standardised transect based method developed for common standards monitoring and Water Framework Directive (WFD) lakes monitoring has been used (the LEAFPACS Survey method). All of the data collected can be used for WFD classification and common standards monitoring conditions assessments and in most cases this has already been done in the relevant reports. Individual lakes have been surveyed at varying frequencies generally ranging from every 3 years to every 12 years as is the case of protected sites or WFD waterbodies, other lakes have usually only received a one off survey.
