Anchoring, mooring and launching spatial distribution in Wales
Anchoring, mooring and launching of recreational vessel has the potential to damage benthic marine habitats. The impact and significance of these activities depend on a number of factors including the intensity of the activity and the sensitivity of underlying habitats. Defining the specific locations in which these activities occur is integral to determining the potential for interactions with sensitive features. The data collection has been commissioned under the Wales non-licensable activities project and provides a robust dataset from a wide range of sources on the location of anchoring, mooring and launching sites in Wales from the high-water mark to 12nm offshore. The collated data was sent to a range of knowledgeable marine stakeholders for consultation to ensure that the polygons accurately represent the anchoring, mooring and launching areas and that no additional areas had been missed. A range of intensity metrics were used to allocate a value of intensity to each polygon for anchoring, mooring and launching. This includes extracting values from AIS data from the Royal Yachting Association, proximity to sailing clubs and centres and consultation with stakeholders. This GIS dataset has been compiled by consultants APEM ltd. from a number of different sources, including; • The Crown Estate • Large scale hydrographic charts • NRW datasets • Defra • OceanWise: Marine Vector Charts (UK Hydrographic Office s-57) • United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) • Boatlaunch website • The RYA UK Coastal Atlas of Recreational Boating (Version 2) A stepwise approach was taken by APEM for the data collection and amalgamation required for production of each of the four layers; anchoring, mooring, launching and no-anchoring. In each case, the GIS data sources were transformed into the same projection (WGS84). The Arc catalogue plugin X-ray was used to rearrange the table structure to match the preferred table structure (with the addition of an “Additional notes column” for mooring and launching.
