An invertebrate survey of Llangennith Moors 2018
Llangennith Moors grazing marsh lies at the western end of the Gower Peninsula and supports a network of ditches, fens and marshy grassland habitats. Prior to this survey, the site's invertebrate fauna was poorly documented, with only a single survey undertaken in 1991, focused primarily on Diptera. Natural Resources Wales commissioned this survey to assess the ditch and fen invertebrate assemblages of the site and to investigate the presence of two European protected species, the Narrow-mouthed Whorl Snail (Vertigo angustior) and Desmoulin’s Whorl Snail (Vertigo moulinsiana). The survey was undertaken in the context of environmental changes associated with the sea wall breach and managed retreat at Cwm Ivy Marsh, which resulted in the loss of grazing marsh habitat to saltmarsh. The survey provided an assessment of the current invertebrate interest of Llangennith Moors and identified habitats of particular ecological importance for wetland invertebrates.

Survey work was undertaken on 15 and 16 October 2018 by two surveyors. The site was divided into survey units based on the existing ditch and field network, with each unit assigned a unique survey code for recording purposes. Survey effort focused on areas considered to have the greatest potential to support important wetland invertebrate assemblages, including semi-natural fen, marshy grassland, and open ditches containing permanent standing water. Improved grassland fields and heavily overgrown or dry ditches, which were considered to have lower ecological value, were not subject to detailed survey. Invertebrate records were collected from suitable ditch and fen habitats, and targeted searches were undertaken for Vertigo angustior and Vertigo moulinsiana. The resulting data were used to assess the conservation value of the site's wetland habitats and associated invertebrate fauna.
